Peer to peer (p2p) file sharing is the distribution of digital files by transferring them between peer computers over the online medium with the help of purposefully designed application like LimeWire or the Ares2011. Unlike the client/server technique in which the server stores the files and send the requested file to the client computer, in peer to peer the network users computers are peers and they share files with each other. In peer to peer file sharing, the peers who need the file is the consumer and the peer who shares it is called the contributor.

Ares P2P is an efficient means to share digital files ranging from audio files, software’s, games, documents, very large movies etc. In fact they Linux users are found to distribute the recent version of open-source applications including the Operating system. The education industry is the major contributor for the p2p file sharing network. The scholars and researchers routinely share data, computer code etc. Even the scientists at NASA use the p2p technology to share satellite images. The commercial Medias have started p2p file sharing to share news, audio and videos. For instance, the CNN have used p2p to stream Obama’s presidential inauguration to almost 650,000 users simultaneously. To relieve the traffic pressure of server due to multiple downloads, Time Warner have used p2p technology. Search engine giant Google and E-commerce giant Amazon.com have tried their hands with p2p file sharing for consumer services.

The students and the computer games lovers contribute to the second major usage of p2p file sharing network. They download games like the world of war craft from the p2p file sharing network. I personally downloaded the OpenOffice in just 2 minutes with Ares 2011 p2p software network.

Here I must say about the Ares application, it really has a great network of users and almost any file needed can be found from Ares2011 network. Notably Ares Vista is among a few p2p applications which still exist after the copyright litigations.

P2P network requires the installation of a purposefully designed file sharing application like the Ares2011 on the client computers. This application installed computer becomes the nodes, or peers to other computer on the network. In cases like the Bit Torrent, different parts of a file are downloaded from multiple nodes on the network, where as in cases like the Ares2011, the entire file is downloaded from one user computer. In both the above said file sharing models, files are shared between peers without intermediate or any interruption. Moreover any one can share and request for any file on the network.

The recent estimation have shown that most percentage of the adults have used peer to peer networks. Almost 50 percent of this population is of college students.

If the P2P traffic is diverted to the servers, there are chances that the servers might crash. So P2P does a kind job by helping in optimizing the network bandwidth. It also helps in building and developing trust among similar interested peers and also saves the file storage space and its download processing time. In P2P file sharing, large files especially movies and HD games are of high demand. Thus by P2P, the information available is much more widened throughout the globe than before.

P2P does not have the control of central authority in the file or content distribution; this is a reason for copyright infringements at times. Mostly the music files are reproduced and shared outside the distribution channels, which violates the copyright of the shared material. The entertainment industry reports that illegal file sharing has a large impact over the sales which obviously cost them enormous loss.
